Estate sues over allegedly fatal surgery

A woman's estate is suing over complications of surgery that allegedly led to her death.

Paul Hasselquist Sr., as administrator of the estate of Nancy Hasselquist, filed a complaint June 5 in Cook County Circuit Court against Dr. Phillip Cacioppo SC, doing business as Alexian Brothers Medical Center, and Crystal Lawson CSA, doing business as Alexian Brothers Medical Center.

On June 5, 2013, Cacioppo began treating the deceased for a hernia. He and the other defendants are cited for tearing her inferior vena cava during hernia surgery and failing to do one or more of the following properly supervise Lawson to adequately treat patients, furnish adequate surgical care, provide adequate oversight, supervise, conduct a proper risk assessment, isolate the inferior vena cava, not neglect the patient, treat her in a suitable manner, call in medical specialists, require consultations, pre-order an adequate supply of blood, and restore her to her former state of good health. As a result of all this, the lawsuit states, the woman died.

The plaintiff seeks damages in excess of $200,000, plus costs. The plaintiff is represented by the Law Offices of Martin L. Glink of Arlington Heights.
