A Cook County patient is suing a hospital, a doctor and several healthcare businesses, alleging professional negligence in a hospital fall resulting from alleged lack of staff response to his call for help.
John Lyons filed a lawsuit June 23 in Cook County Circuit Court complaint against Adventist GlenOaks Hospital, Adventist Midwest Health, Alexian Brothers-AHS Midwest Region Health Co., doing business as Amita, Dr. Nirati Parikh, and Kavya Medical Center, alleging professional negligence in a 2013 incident.
According to the filing, on July 7, 2013, Lyons was taken to the emergency room at GlenOaks Hospital in Glendale Heights with a two-week history of dizziness and frequent falling. The suit states Lyons arrived with slurred speech, amnesia and hyponatremia, a condition that occurs when the level of sodium in blood is abnormally low, and was admitted for observation.
The complaint states Lyons called for help to navigate to the bathroom in the early morning hours of July 8, but no one responded and he subsequently fell while attempting to walk by himself. The suit states the defendants failed to perform adequate fall risk assessments, develop, implement and enforce a care plan and properly train staff.
Lyons seeks damages in excess of $50,000, plus attorney fees and costs. He is represented by attorney Kenneth Lumb of Corboy & Demetrio in Chicago.
