Survivors sue over plane crash

A major aircraft manufacturer is being sued by those who experienced a crash of one of its airplanes in San Francisco in 2013.

Kil Soo Han, Myoung Su Jeon, Hee-Young Hwang, Bum-Seok Lee, Jinyoung Kim, Hye Ran Bong, Younga Kim, Sang Oh Hong, Sin Baek Kang, Yeong Sun Lim, Yoon Kyoung Choi, Jong Jin Lim, Su Jeong Lee, Jung Hyeon Kang, Jung Su Kim, Haesoon Chun and Vedpal Singh filed a complaint June 25 in Cook County Circuit Court against the Boeing Co.

The plaintiffs all were passengers on Asiana Airlines Flight 214, a Boeing 777 aircraft that crashed at San Francisco International Airport on July 6, 2013.

According to the lawsuit, the defendant is cited with failing to provide an effective low airspeed alerter system; provide effective flight control computers; provide an effective autothrottle system; give adequate warnings to users; warn pilots to constantly monitor airspeed when there was no voice-callout low airspeed alert; properly inspect, maintain and repair its aircraft; perform an effective system analysis; perform airworthiness testing; provide a voice callout low airspeed or low energy warning functions; provide an effective alerting system; and provide proper high angle of attack limiting and protection.

As a result, the flight crashed at 11:26 a.m. as its airspeed decreased, the lawsuit states. The plaintiffs allege the sustained severe physical and psychological injury, pain and suffering, and loss of earnings.

The plaintiffs, citing negligence, strict liability, seek damages in excess $50,000, plus costs.

The plaintiffs are represented by Todd A. Smith, Brian LaCien and Sean M. Houlihan of Power, Rogers and Smith PC in Chicago.
