Chicago Board of Education sued for negligent misrepresentation

Cunningham

A teacher is suing the Chicago Board of Education after she was allegedly placed on the "do not hire" list.

Karin Stine filed a lawsuit July 29 in the Cook County Circuit Court against the Board of Education of the City of Chicago, Elsa Carmona and other unknown employees of the board, citing negligent misrepresentation.

According to the complaint, in August 2008, Stine began working for Carmona as a reading specialist at Little Village Academy and received favorable performance evaluations.

Stine claims that when the Illinois Reading First grant that paid her wages expired, her position was terminated, but in August 2009, alternative funding gave her the same position for that school year.

The lawsuit states when that funding ran out in June 2010, Stine was "non-renewed," and after a year of applying to positions with Chicago Public Schools, she learned the board had placed her on a "do not hire" list.

The defendant is accused of misrepresenting Stine, as the list is reserved for those who are "non-renewed" for two years or those deemed unfit to teach.

Stine is being represented in the case by attorney Jemelle D. Cunningham of Lad Law Group P.C.
