Chicago's board of education, an organization that manages "failing" schools and a pair of security guards are facing suit over claims the two guards assaulted and battered a student at a school on the city's southwest side.

Mirium King, as mother and next friend of a minor child, filed a lawsuit March 18 in the Cook County Circuit Court against the Board of Education of the City of Chicago and Academy for Urban School Leadership (AUSL), as well as Ashley Riley and Julian Wooden, both individually and as agents and/or employees of the board and academy.

King's suit includes counts alleging assault, battery, willful and wanton conduct, intentional infliction of emotional distress, negligent failure to prevent assault and battery and negligent hiring, training and supervision.

King's child, according to the complaint, was a student at the Dewey School of Excellence at 5415 S. Union Ave. in New City. King claims Riley and Wooden, security guards at the school, reprimanded her child on Sept. 9, during which time she claims they assaulted, struck and beat him on school grounds.

AUSL, one of the defendants, is an organization created in 2001 with the mission of improving "student achievement in chronically failing schools, primarily in Chicago, through its disciplined transformation process," according to its website that notes Dewey is one of the 29 schools it currently manages.

King is seeking at least $50,000 in damages, plus costs, and is being represented in the case by Steven R. Levin and Alexander W. Konetzki of Levin Riback Law Group P.C.
