Maryhaven, Ballard nursing homes hit with suit alleging neglect

Scales

A woman is suing over claims she was neglected at two Illinois nursing homes.

Elsa Borras filed a lawsuit May 7 in the Cook County Circuit Court against Presence RHC Senior Services, doing business as Presence Maryhaven Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, and Presence RHC Senior Services, doing business as Presence Ballard Nursing Center.

According to the complaint, Borras was admitted to the Maryhaven center in Glenview on Jan. 19, 2012, suffering from many conditions, including dementia, muscle weakness, convulsions, hypertension and diabetes. She was then admitted to the Ballard center in Des Plaines on July 17, 2012.

During her stay at both facilities, Borras claims she developed multiple pressure sores and wounds. She further alleges she suffered from an infection that led to sepsis, as well as malnutrition and dehydration, at the Ballard center. The suit accuses both facilities of negligence and violating the Illinois Nursing Home Care Act.

Borras is seeking damages in excess of the jurisdictional limit and is being represented in the case by attorney Alan H. Bender of Goldstein, Bender & Romanoff.
