A woman is suing over claims she suffered injuries during surgery at St. Alexius Medical Center.

Smita Shah filed a lawsuit July 10 in the Cook County Circuit Court against St. Alexius Medical Center, Progressive Women's Healthcare S.C., and Drs. Mona Ghosh, Ishwar Patel and Alfonso Galiano.

According to the complaint, Shah underwent several surgical procedures by Ghosh of Progressive Women's Healthcare and the other defendant doctors at St. Alexius Medical Center on July 23, 2012.

She alleges she was discharged July 26, 2012 and was readmitted to undergo surgery to repair an intestinal perforation on July 30, 2012, when she was diagnosed with peritonitis with multiple pelvic abscesses, a hernia and necrotic omentum.

The defendants are accused of professional negligence for failing to diagnose the perforation before completing the surgery, the suit states.

Shah is seeking more than $50,000 in damages and is being represented in the case by attorney Bradley Z. Schulman of Motherway & Napleton LLP in Chicago.
