Foot amputation prompts suit against Cook County podiatrists

Scales

A woman is suing over claims her podiatrists' negligence led to an infection in her foot that required amputation.

Helen and Billy Stotler filed a lawsuit July 30 in the Cook County Circuit Court against Cook County and Drs. Jennifer Suffern, Mark Godsell and Richard Pulla.

According to the complaint, Helen Stotler received treatment from the defendant doctors at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County in June and July 2013. She claims an August 2013 MRI at LaGrange Memorial Hospital revealed osteomyelitis, which required her to undergo a below-the-knee amputation of her left leg.

She accuses the defendants of failing to properly diagnose and treat her by allowing osteomyelitis to develop in her foot.

The Stotlers are seeking more than $50,000 in damages and are being represented in the case by attorney Brian Murphy of Hofeld and Schaffner in Chicago.

This is a report on a civil lawsuit filed in the Cook County Circuit Court. The details in this report come from an original complaint filed by a plaintiff. Please note, a complaint represents an accusation by a private individual, not the government. It is not an indication of guilt, and it only represents one side of the story.
