A former home remodeler is suing dozens of companies, claiming her and her husband's exposure to asbestos caused her to develop lung cancer.

Nancy Carter filed a complaint Nov. 18 in Cook County Circuit Court against A.W. Chesterton Co., Crane Co., H.B. Fuller Co. and several others.

According to the complaint, Carter was employed in various capacities, including as a home remodeler, at various locations from 1961 to 1979, during which time she was exposed to products containing asbestos. She also claims secondary exposure from her husband, who worked as a cement mason.

Carter, who was diagnosed with lung cancer on May 28, contends the defendants were aware or should have been aware of the potential risks of long-term asbestos exposure and failed to warn about the dangers.

She is seeking damages in excess of jurisdictional amount, plus court costs, and is represented by attorney David O. Barrett of Cooney & Conway in Chicago.

This is a report on a civil lawsuit filed at Cook County Circuit Court. The details in this report come from an original complaint filed by a plaintiff. Please note that a complaint represents an accusation by a private individual, not the government. It is not an indication of guilt and it represents only one side of the story.
