Man files suit over flooding he alleges brought feces into his apartment

Scales 150x150

The owner of a Chicago apartment complex is facing a lawsuit from a man who claims its failure to maintain the plumbing led to a flood that brought human waste and feces into his basement unit.

Jay Russell filed suit Dec. 6 in Cook County Circuit Court against Collier Scott Properties LLC.

According to the complaint, Russell lived in the basement apartment of the defendant's  building in the 6000 Block of South Rockwell Avenue. He claims his apartment flooded in May 2013, when the defendant initiated a remodeling, plumbing and/or other construction project at the building.

The flooding contained feces and human waste, the suit states, alleging that Russell developed serious health problems as a result.

He claims the defendant knew about the situation but failed to inform him, or fix the problem in a reasonable amount of time.

Russell seeks more than $50,000 in damages and is represented by attorney Steven C. Armbruster of The Vrdolyak Law Group in Chicago.
