A Cook County hospital and doctor are being sued by a patient who claims her doctor failed to remove all of her appendix during surgery.

Sharon Cook on Dec. 1 filed a medical malpractice lawsuit in Cook County Circuit Court against Advocate South Suburban Hospital, Advocate Health & Hospitals Corp., Dr. Sanath Kumar and Sanath Kumar M.D. Ltd.

According to the complaint, Cook went to Advocated South Suburban Hospital with appendicitis on Oct. 18, 2011, when Kumar operated on her, but failed to remove her entire appendix, leaving a stump of 4.1 centimeters.

On May 16, 2014, the suit states, Cook had a second appendectomy after the stump became re-infected and ruptured, causing her to incur more medical expenses and additional pain and suffering.

The plaintiff asserts she didn’t know she had a stump of appendix left until the second surgery.

Cook is seeking damages and is represented by Chicago attorney Donald Shapiro.
