A Tinley Park woman on Tuesday sued a grocery store chain over an alleged salmonella outbreak she asserts got her and at least 15 other people sick in May.

In her suit against Jewel Food Stores Inc., Janet Dominik claims she began experiencing severe gastrointestinal symptoms on May 9, four days after she bought food from the deli of the Tinley Park Jewel.

The county health department on June 14 learned of the salmonella outbreak linked to food from the deli that apparently infected at least 15 people, the suit states, noting that Jewel temporarily closed its deli the same day.

Dominik claims the store was negligent by failing to properly maintain the location where it made and sold food from in a sanitary manner. Filed in Cook County Circuit Court, the complaint does not identify the food Dominick purchased from the deli, but alleges it was adulterated with salmonella.

It appears that Dominik isn't the only person who sued over the alleged outbreak. The Chicago Tribune in June published an article about a woman who filed a lawsuit against Jewel, claiming her 11-year-old son was hospitalized after eating food from the deli in its Tinley Park store at 171st Street and Harlem Avenue.

Dominick is represented by Chicago attorneys Timothy S. Tomasik and Patrick J. Giese of Tomasik Kotin Kasserman LLC.

This is a report on a civil lawsuit filed in Cook County Circuit Court. The details in this report come from an original complaint filed by a plaintiff. Please note, a complaint represents an accusation by a private individual, not the government. It is not an indication of guilt and represents only one side of the story.
