A Cook County woman filed suit against a municipality-run hospital and a physician alleging medical malpractice and wrongful death following the traumatic loss of her unborn child in a 2014 gynecological mishap.
Madeline Edwards brought a complaint on her own behalf and as special administrator of the estate of Baby Fetus Edwards against the County of Cook, doing business as Provident Hospital of Cook County, and Valerie Hansbrough on July 2 in Cook County Circuit Court, alleging medical malpractice in the July 2014 incident.
According to the filing, when Edwards received treatment for uterine polyps from Hansbrough on or about July 2, 2014, the doctor performed the procedure and prescribed medication without first administering a pregnancy test.
The suit states that the drug, called Misoprostol/Cytotec, caused Edwards to suffer excessive vaginal bleeding followed by a spontaneous abortion. The miscarriage occurred approximately 8 weeks into the pregnancy; the complaint states that the medication was incorrectly prescribed and administered in breach of duty.
Claiming that the wrongful death of the fetus was based on the physician’s and hospital’s misconduct, and alleging serious physical and emotional injuries, the plaintiff seeks damages in excess of $50,000 plus attorneys’ fees and costs.
