A Cook County union and five of its members are suing Google to find out the name of an anonymous email user.

Local 73 Service Employees International Union and five of its officers (Christine Boardman, Brenda Woodall, Phil Martini, Remzi Jaos and Terry Barnett) filed suit Aug. 31 in Cook County Circuit Court, Law Division to obtain a court order forcing Google Inc. to release the name of a user who allegedly sent a defamatory email.

The suit claims that at around 10:45 a.m. on Aug. 24 someone used the Google email service to send an anonymous defamatory email to approximately 100 SEIU members and employees. The content of the email makes allegations regarding the plaintiffs’ personal lives and management of the union.

Attorney Joel A. D’Alba of Asher, Gittler and D’Alba Inc., a Chicago firm, is representing the plaintiffs, who are requesting a court order forcing Google to reveal the name and address of the person who owns the email in question, which is sesul73@gmail.com. The plaintiffs plan to file a defamation suit against the sender once that person’s identity is revealed.

Cook County Circuit Court, Law Division case number 2015-L-008946.
