A Berwyn woman is suing her deceased husband's former employer, alleging negligence led to a cardiac event that contributed to his death.

Angelica Gonzalez, as independent administrator of the estate of Manuel Gonzalez, filed a lawsuit Aug. 28 in Cook County Circuit Court against BNSF Railway Company, alleging wrongful death.

According to the complaint, on Aug. 31, 2013, Manuel Gonzalez suffered a cardiac event while on duty employed by BNSF at a railroad yard in Cicero. The suit says BNSF was negligent in its failure to provide a safe work environment.

The lawsuit also alleges BNSF Railway did not provide 911 emergency dispatchers with timely and accurate information, and did not maintain the premises of the railroad yard in a manner that would allow prompt access by emergency responders. BNSF employees also suspended CPR efforts to the decedent's detriment, among other acts of negligence or omissions, according to the suit.

As a result, Manuel Gonzalez died Sept. 8, 2013, the complaint states. The suit says Gonzalez's surviving wife and two children sustained pecuniary loss, grief, loss of support, loss of consortium and severe damage due to his death.

Angelica Gonzalez seeks judgment of more than $50,000, plus court costs. She is represented by attorneys Daniel E. Murphy and Justin S. Stoner of Murphy & Murphy in Chicago.

Cook County Circuit Court case number 2015L008876.
