The Renaissance Park South sued over alleged wrongful death of woman

Markham 0071

An estate administrator is seeking financial restitution in the alleged wrongful death of a woman.

Larry Rose, independent administrator of the estate of Juanita Cochran, deceased, filed suit on Sept. 14 in Cook County Circuit Court, Law Division against The Renaissance Park South LLC, doing business as The Renaissance Park South, a long-term nursing home care facility in Chicago.

According to the complaint, Cochran was a resident at the Renaissance nursing home, where it was known that she suffered from dementia, had bilateral lower extremity edema, was at increased risk for pressure sores, and was dependent on them for extensive assistance and supervision. She had a plan that recommended for constant turning and having her heels protected. Despite this, she was still allegedly at risk for pressure sores and edema between Oct. 23, 2013, and Jan. 3, 2014.

On Jan. 15, a wound was noted but not assessed by professionals, and later revealed as a stage two wound on Jan. 22 and her plan revised for more turning at a quicker pace, every two hours, according to the complaint. Despite this, her situation worsened, due to alleged continued neglect and she ultimately passed away on Feb. 22, 2014.

The plaintiff charges various counts of negligence on behalf of the defendants, including malpractice, abuse, pain and suffering, loss of function, and loss of quality of life, violation of the Nursing Home Act, and other damages, including wrongful death.

The plaintiff demands a trial by jury and an amount of more than $50,000, plus attorney fees, court costs and other damages as the court sees fit.

The plaintiff is being represented by Tara Devine of Salvi, Schostok & Pritchard P.C. of Chicago.

Cook County Circuit Court, Law Division case number 2015-L-009417.
