A Cook County patient is suing a heart surgeon, alleging malpractice during surgery.

Arshad Muhammad filed a lawsuit Sept. 1 in Cook County Circuit Court against Swedish Covenant Hospital, Dr. Muhammad A. Saudye and Shifa Cardiology Consultants.

According to the complaint, on Nov. 26, 2013, after Muhammad's admission to Swedish Covenant Hospital in Chicago for a heart attack, Dr. Saudye performed heart surgery on the plaintiff, including angioplasty, catheterization and deployment of stents. Muhammad was discharged Nov. 28.

However, the suit says, after the plaintiff suffered another heart attack Dec. 1, 2013, tests showed Muhammad's stent was insufficiently deployed during the first surgery, allowing an arterial blockage that caused the second heart attack.

Muhammad seeks damages in excess of $50,000, including compensation for diminished earning capacity. He is represented by attorney John A. Culver of the Law Offices of John A. Culver in Chicago.

Cook County Circuit Court case number 2015-L-008968.
