Cook County man sues ex-customer, alleging defamation in Yelp review

A Cook County man and his business are suing a former customer, alleging defamation for statements made on Yelp.

Thomas Koza, on behalf of himself and his business, Tom’s Pond Service Inc. in Wheeling, filed a lawsuit Oct. 21 in Cook County Circuit Court against Adam Qadri and Exotic Motors Inc. in Rolling Meadows.

According to the suit, between March and July 2015, Koza performed repairs and upkeep on a retaining pond on the defendant’s property. However, the suit says Qadri called the plaintiff “incompetent,” “untrustworthy, unprofessional” and made other disparaging remarks and false statements both in an e-mail to his Exotic Motors co-workers and on the online review website Yelp.

Koza seeks damages in of more than $50,000, plus punitive damages and litigation costs. He is represented by attorney Erin A. Walgrave of Newland & Newland in Arlington Heights.
