A Cook County woman is suing a Maywood meat market, alleging her mother suffered a fatal injury while placing a meat order.

Alfarae Alexander, special administrator of the estate of Rita Godwin, filed a lawsuit Oct. 29 in Cook County Circuit Court against Morris Meat Market Inc. doing business as Morris Meat Market, Meat Packing Company Inc. doing business as Morris Meat Market and Morris Meat Market.

According to the complaint, on July 3, 2014, Godwin was injured when another customer bumped into an empty metal rack in front of the business’ meat counter at 1406 S. Fifth Ave, Maywood. The metal rack "fell with great force" and struck Godwin on the knee. As a result of her injury, the suit says Godwin developed a fatal blood clot that caused her death July 15, 2014.

The plaintiff alleges Morris Meat Market is liable for her mother’s death because it allowed the unstable rack to remain on the floor near customers.

Alexander seeks damages of more than $50,000. She is represented by attorney Rex U. Hunter of the Hunter Law Offices in Chicago.

Cook County Circuit Court case number 2015-L-010970.
