Mother blames Jackson Park Hospital for pregnant daughter's death

Pregnancy

A Cook County woman is suing Jackson Park Hospital and its staff, alleging her pregnant daughter died as a result of negligent care.

Carmelita Nichols, special administrator of the estate of Constance G. Butler, filed a lawsuit Aug. 21 in Cook County Circuit Court against the Jackson Park Hospital Foundation, Emergency Medical Services Corp., Emcare Holdings Inc., Dr. Earl Frederick and Dr. Harshad Mehta, individually and as agents of the Jackson Park Hospital Foundation, and Emergency Medical Services Corp.

According to the complaint, between March 23-27, Butler, who was two months’ pregnant, complained of stomach pains, had seizures and exhibited psychotic symptoms before being admitted to the emergency room at Jackson Park Hospital. The suit says Butler was transferred to the hospital’s psychiatric floor where she died March 27.

The lawsuit states the defendants’ negligence in managing Butler’s seizure disorder led to her death.

Nichols seeks damages of more than $50,000, plus litigation costs. She is represented by attorneys Timothy R. Tyler and Jesse R. Tyler of the Tyler Law Offices in Chicago.

Cook County Circuit Court case number 2015-L008579.
