CHICAGO – A Buffalo Grove church is suing another ministry and the Illinois secretary of state, alleging its merger is invalid.

Lord’s Love Community Church of Buffalo Grove filed a lawsuit Nov. 17 in Cook County Circuit Court against Canaan Church Foundation and Illinois Secretary of the State Jesse White, alleging procedural errors invalidate the merger.

According to the complaint, on June 25, 2013, White issued a certificate of merger between the two churches. However, the suit says, neither members of Lord’s Love nor did its board of directors approved the merger, as required by law. As written consent was not given, the plaintiff alleges the merger is invalid.

Lord’s Love seeks invalidation of the merger, reinstatement of Lord’s Love as a legal entity, and other damages to be determined by the court. It is represented by attorney David M. Smolin of Brandwein & Smolin LLC in Chicago.

Cook County Circuit Court Case number 2015-CH-16863.
