Daughter blames South Shore Hospital for mother’s heart attack death

Heart care

CHICAGO – A Cook County woman is suing a Chicago hospital and staff members, alleging the failure to swiftly diagnose and treat her mother’s heart attack led to her death.

Kelly Richardson, independent administrator of the estate of Ludie Richardson, filed a lawsuit Dec. 3 in Cook County Circuit Court against South Shore Hospital Corp., Dr. Elbert B. Smith, Dr. Severyn Yaroshevsky, Dr. Sophie Toya, and registered nurses Aretha Young-Winters, Catina V. Parker and Jennifer Brooks, alleging wrongful death from medical malpractice.

According to the complaint, Ludie Richardson was in the defendants’ care when she suffered a heart attack and pulmonary embolism, or blood clot to the lung. The suit says the doctors failed to order a CT scan and ignored her medical history, blood work and X-ray results. As a result, the suit states, Richardson died Nov. 29, 2014.

Richardson seeks punitive and compensatory damages of more than $50,000, plus litigation costs. She is represented by attorneys Marc A. Taxman and Lindsay J. Scheidt of Anesi, Ozmon, Rodin, Novak & Kohen LTD in Chicago.

Cook County Circuit Court Case number 2015-L012236.
