Mother blames West Suburban's doctors for newborn’s brain damage

Blood pressure

CHICAGO – A Cook County mother is suing doctors at an Oak Park hospital, alleging a 68-minute absence of fetal monitoring left her child with permanent brain injuries.

Vanessa Popp, mother and next friend of Josephine Perez (a minor), filed a lawsuit Dec. 23 in Cook County Circuit Court, against VHS West Suburban Medical Center Inc., Dr. Natasha Diaz, Dr. Tuere Coulter and PCC Community Wellness Center, alleging medical malpractice.

According to the complaint, Popp came to West Suburban Nov. 25, 2010, in active labor. When she was transferred to the operating room for a C-section, the suit says, the fetal monitor was disconnected, even when Popp’s blood pressure dropped to dangerous levels when a spinal epidural was given.

As a result, the baby, Josephine, suffered fetal asphyxia and seizures, the lawsuit states.

Popp seeks damages of more than $50,000, plus legal costs. She is represented by attorney Michael P. Cogan of Cogan & Power PC in Chicago.
