CHICAGO – A Cook County man is suing a Schaumburg retirement village, alleging it failed to supervise his mother, allowing her to fall and suffer fatal complications.

Robert Wiegard, personal representative of the estate of Susan Wiegard, filed a lawsuit Jan. 5 in Cook County Circuit Court against Evangelical Retirement Homes of Greater Chicago Inc., doing business as Friendship Village of Schaumburg, and Friendship Senior Options NFP, alleging negligence, wrongful death and violations of the Nursing Home Care Act.

According to the complaint, Susan Wiegard resided at Friendship Village for four days in mid-January of 2014, where she suffered an unwitnessed fall. After a transfer to St. Alexius Medical Center on Jan. 14, the suit says, she was diagnosed with fractures of the vertebrae and on Feb. 19 underwent a hemilaminectomy, a procedure to treat herniated disks.

The suit says negligence on the part of Friendship Village allowed Wiegard to fall, and the resulting surgery contributed to her death Aug. 10, 2014.

Wiegard seeks damages of more than $50,000, plus litigation costs. He is represented by attorneys Susan L. Novosad and Mary K. Volk of Levin & Perconti in Chicago.
