Patient blames doctors at Swedish Covenant Medical Group for permanent injuries

CHICAGO – A Chicago man is suing doctors at Swedish Covenant Hospital, alleging they misdiagnosed an injury to his arm, leaving him with nerve damage and disfigurement.

Jose Torres filed a lawsuit Jan. 7 in Cook County Circuit Court against Dr. Denis Williams, Lakefront Medical Associates LLC, doing business as Chicago Health Medical Group, Swedish Covenant Management Services Inc., doing business as Swedish Covenant Medical Group, Dr. Michael Shao, Dr. Stephen Grohmann, Infectious Disease Consultants Group PC, Dr. Ronnie Mandal, Mayfair Familycare SC, Dr. Rasheed Akhtar, Dr. James Vasilakis, and Swedish Emergency Associates PC, alleging medical malpractice.

According to the complaint, Torres came to to Swedish Covenant in Chicago, Jan. 7, 2014 for treatment of a fever and swollen left arm. After an MRI, the suit says, Akhtar and Vasilakis diagnosed Torres with cellulitus. 

The plaintiff alleges says over the next eight days he underwent multiple debridements to clean the wound. However, the lawsuit states, since treatment ended Jan. 15, 2014, he has no feeling in his left thumb and cannot fully extend his disfigured left arm. 

The plaintiff alleges he subsequently learned he had necrotizing fasciitis, a condition the defendants misdiagnosed.

Torres seeks a jury trial and damages of more than $50,000. He is represented by attorney Rebecca Neubauer of Romanucci & Blandin LLC in Chicago.
