CHICAGO—A historic Chicago museum is suing Level 3 Construction and other contractors who allegedly damaged its underground storage vault.
The Art Institute of Chicago filed a lawsuit on Jan. 15 in Cook County Circuit Court against Level 3 Construction Inc., HBK Engineering LLC, John Burns Construction Co. and Cobra Concrete Cutting Services Co., alleging negligence and liability for property damage.
According to the complaint, the institute hired Level 3 and the other defendants in August 2013 to dig a trench and cut concrete for telecommunication cables near an underground storage vault adjacent to the museum’s property. During the work, the suit claims the defendants damaged the vault’s concrete roof, requiring it to be removed and replaced.
The Art Institute seeks a jury trial and damages of $219,307, which is the roof's replacement cost. It is represented by attorney Robert Ostojic of Leahy, Eisenberg & Fraenkel Ltd. in Chicago.
