CHICAGO — A Cook County woman says staff members at the Exceptional Care nursing home were negligent in her mother’s care, allegedly causing her to develop fatal complications.
Josephine Baldwin, independent administrator of the estate of Stella Studnicka, filed a lawsuit Jan. 25 in Cook County Circuit Court against Exceptional Care LLC, alleging personal injury liability under the Illinois Nursing Home Care Act.
According to the complaint, Studnicka was admitted to Exceptional Care in the Chicago suburb of Burbank on Nov. 15, 2012, with subsequent diagnoses of Parkinson’s disease, bipolar disorder, psychosis and other disorders. Between Oct. 15, 2013, and Jan. 23, 2014,, she allegedly suffered from respiratory distress, falls, confusion and open wounds due to staff negligence. After her family requested she be transferred to Little Company of Mary on Jan. 23, the suit says, she was diagnosed with pneumonia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder, congestive heart failure and an infected leg wound. She passed away two days later, on Jan. 25, 2014.
Baldwin seeks damages in excess of $50,000, plus litigation costs. She is represented by attorney Jeffrey Schlapp of Schlapp Law Group LLC in Chicago.
