CHICAGO — A Cook County man says a doctor practicing at Edward Hospital performed an allegedly unnecessary cardiac procedure on him without prior consent.
Jeffrey Kroma filed a lawsuit Feb. 3 in Cook County Circuit Court against Dr. Mark Goodwin and Edward Hospital Corp., doing business as Edward Hospital, alleging medical malpractice.
According to the complaint, after Kroma underwent a nuclear exercise stress test on Feb. 5, 2014, Goodwin diagnosed him with premature ventricular contractions and some exertional shortness of breath. An angiogram was performed the same day, the suit says, revealing plaque buildup in Kroma’s coronary arteries. Goodwin treated the buildup with an angioplasty, but the claim states the procedure was unsuccessful.
Kroma says Goodwin then performed during the same operation a laser atherectomy to remove the buildup, but did not inform him about the procedure or its risks. During the procedure, the suit says a circumflex coronary artery was cut, disrupting blood flow and causing unspecified injuries to the patient.
Kroma seeks a jury trial and damages of more than $50,000. He is represented by attorneys Angel P. Bakov and Glen J. Dunn Jr. of Glen J. Dunn & Associates Ltd. in Chicago.
