Family blames Canton long-term care facility for relative's death

CHICAGO — An estate administrator is suing a Canton health care provider, alleging negligence caused a relative's death.

Stephanie Essex, as estate administrator for Kathi Bellows,  filed a lawsuit April 18, in Cook County Circuit Court against Renaissance Care Center, Inc. and Certified Health Management, Inc., alleging they knowingly violated Illinois' Nursing Home Care Act by failing to prevent the development and deterioration of Bellows' pressure sores.

According to the complaint, between June 18-Sept., 26, 2014, Kathi Bellows, 60, developed multiple pressure sores that became infected contributed to her death Dec. 29, 2014. The plaintiff alleges Renaissance Care Center in Canton and Certified Health Management failed to assess Bellows' condition and failed to provide adequate care and treatment to promote the healing of pressure sores.

Essex seeks a trial by jury, damages of more than $50,000, plus attorney fees and the costs of suit. She is represented by attorneys Mary K. Volk and Michael F. Bonamarte of Levin & Perconti in Chicago.
