CHICAGO — A Chicago woman is suing Chicago and a city police officer, alleging excessive force in the shooting death of her husband.
Laquida Cockerham, administrator of the estate of Alfontish Cockerham, filed a lawsuit Feb. 17 in Cook County Circuit Court against the city of Chicago and police officer Anthony Babicz, alleging abuse, assault, excessive force and violation of civil rights in firing a gun at the plaintiff's husband without any warning.
According to the complaint, on June 20, 2015, Alfontish Cockerham was gunned down by Babicz at East 71st Street and Merrill Avenue despite having not violated any laws nor harmed any civilian. The plaintiff alleges Babicz shot her husband even though the officer did not have enough evidence nor cause to fire.
Laquida Cockerham seeks a trial by jury, compensation of more than $50,000, plus all legal fees and any other relief the court deems just. She is represented by attorneys Nnanenyem E. Uche of Chicago and Morris A. Anyah of Law Office of Morris A. Anyah LLC in Chicago.
