CHICAGO — An insurance company is suing a fire protection system business, alleging defective design led to more than $1 million in water damage to Chicago's Trump Tower, a building it insures for The Trump Organization.

Chubb Custom Insurance Company filed a lawsuit June 8 in Cook County Circuit Court against Simplexgrinnell LP, alleging design defect, liability, and negligence in failing to properly design the fire protection systems for the Trump property.

According to the complaint, The Trump Organization suffered damage after a fire suppression system pipe burst and flooded the third floor of Trump Tower in Chicago. The plaintiff alleges the defendant was in charge of engineering the fire protection systems throughout Trump Tower but failed to properly diagnose and test the system, specifically the piping system for the sprinkler. Chubb said it paid to repair the damage under the policy held by The Trump Organization.

Chubb seeks judgment of at least $1 million, plus court costs and any further relief the court grants. It is represented by attorney Matthew J. Schueler of Schueler, Dallavo & Casieri in Chicago.
