Men seek damages from Chicago, police officer over Taser use

CHICAGO — Two men are alleging assault, battery, excessive force and violation of civil rights by a Chicago police officer who tasered them.

Eli Cook and Derrick Brandon are suing the City of Chicago and Chicago Police Officer A. Zayas. The plaintiffs filed suit on Sept. 8 in Cook County Circuit Court against the defendants, alleging that Zayas used his Taser on Cook and Brandon.

According to the complaint, the plaintiffs allege that on Sept. 11, 2015, Cook and Brandon experienced extreme pain and physical injuries when they were shocked by the Taser. The plaintiffs hold the city and Zayas responsible for allegedly using the Taser when it was unreasonable and unjustified to do so.

The plaintiffs request a trial by jury and seek compensatory damages, court costs, punitive damages, and any further relief the court grants. They are represented by Daniel Nixa of The Nixa Law Firm, LLC in Chicago.
