CHICAGO — A man who was sentenced to 200 years in prison in connection with a September 1977 homicide case is suing the Chicago Police Department and the City of Chicago, alleging violation of federal law.
Rudie Bell, who was convicted of murder, filed a complaint on Feb. 2 in Cook County Circuit Court against the defendants, alleging that they have failed to properly respond to his request for documents.
According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that in 2016, he sustained damages from not being granted all the documents he requested. The plaintiff holds the defendants responsible for allegedly failing to make a thorough search to produce the records he requested.
The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks a declaration the city violated the Freedom of Information Act, an order for the defendants to produce the requested records, an injunction against the defendants, civil penalties, court costs and any further relief this court grants.
