A federal judge in Chicago has weighed in again on the issue of whether workers at Indiana’s Ameristar Casino put undue pressure on patrons as part of an ongoing dispute, dismissing more allegations a union illegally harassed casino patrons to coerce them to participate in a union-sponsored boycott as part of a labor dispute with the casino.
A federal judge has cleared an East Chicago casino and a group of its customers to proceed with a lawsuit against a union, saying the union’s actions to escalate its long running labor feud with the casino by personally targeting the customers with a campaign of fliers, phone calls and visits to their homes and businesses, could be considered illegal harassment going beyond mere “handbilling” and other forms of permissible persuasive speech.

Employees of the Chicago Park District, represented by the Service Employees International Union have challenged the constitutionality of a state law reforming the Park District’s public employee pension fund, which supporters believed would help the district stabilize its pension liabilities. On Oct. 8, SEIU Local 73 and named plaintiffs, Chicago Park District retiree David Biedron and current Chicago Park District employee Heather Kelly, filed suit in Cook County Circuit Court.
