Former nursing home workers sue, claim they were fired for reporting illegal practices

By Whitney Brakken | Jan 2, 2014

A licensed nurse and assistant director of nursing are suing their former employer, claiming they were terminated for reporting illegal and improper practices.

Saundria Gray and Vanessa Iverson filed a lawsuit Aug. 20 in the Circuit Court of Cook County against SIR Management Inc., Greenwood Care Management Inc. Greenwood Care Inc., Greenwood Care LLC and Arlene Siap, citing retaliatory discharge and tortious interference with prospective economic advantage.

Their suit also cites the state's Whistleblower Act, the Nursing Home Care Act and Specialized Mental Health Rehabilitation Act.

According to the complaint, Gray and Iverson were employed by the defendants until they were terminated in January 2013. The suit states that Iverson complained to the defendants on Dec. 27, 2012 about illegal and improper practices, including altering medical records, underreporting violent incidents and narcotics tampering.

Gray asserts that she called the Illinois Department of Public Health on Jan. 22, 2013 to report the illegal and improper practices, which spurred the Department of Public Health to begin an investigation into the facility.

Both Iverson and Gray claim they were terminated in retaliation for reporting the illegal and improper practices.

They are seeking more than $50,000 in damages and are being represented by attorney Michael D. Robbins of Michael D. Robbins & Associates and Marty Denis and Bethany A. Hilbert of Barlow, Kobata & Denis LLP.
