Country Club Hills AMC Theatre sued after wheelchair-bound patron injured on unlit steps

By Annie Cosby | Apr 29, 2014

A couple is suing movie theater companies, claiming their negligence required the husband to push his wife's wheelchair down unlit steps in a dark theater.

Anna Marie Godfrey and Timothy Godfrey filed suit April 24 in the Cook County Circuit Court against American Multi-Cinema Inc., doing business as AMC Theatres Country Club Hills 16, AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc. and Scott Misevich, citing negligence.

According to the complaint, Timothy was pushing Anna Marie in her wheelchair into an auditorium at AMC Theatres in Country Club Hills where the overhead lights were out and the movie was playing on June 15. He claims he pushed her down two steps, which caused her to fall from the wheelchair and sustain injuries.

The Godfreys accuses the defendants, including the Misevich, the theater's general manager, of failing to replace the lights on the steps and failing to escort them to the handicap viewing area.

They are seeking more than $50,000 in damages and being represented in the case by attorney Francis Patrick Murphy of Corboy & Demetrio P.C.
