Municipalities seek $42K for chemical spill cleanup at Bridgeview meat-packing facility

Stampede

Several Illinois municipalities and fire districts are suing a Bridgeview meat-packing plant to recoup the costs they spent cleaning up a 2011 chemical spill.

The villages of Bedford Park, Chicago Ridge, Evergreen Park, Oak Lawn and Summit; the City of Burbank; Central Stickney, Hometown, North Palos and Roberts Park fire protection districts; and Mutual Aid Box Alarm System Division 21 filed a lawsuit June 13 in the Cook County Circuit Court against Stampede Meat Inc.

According to the complaint, there was a chemical spill of chlorine dioxide at the defendant's facility on South 78th Avenue in Bridgeview on April 5, 2011. As a result, the plaintiffs assert that had to conduct a hazardous materials response cleanup using firefighters and emergency response vehicles.

They are seeking $42,295 in reimbursement for the cleanup under the Hazardous Materials Response Reimbursement Act, as well as statutes governing fire district and municipality non-resident fees.

The plaintiffs are being represented in the case by attorneys Joseph Miller III and David T. Zafiratos of Ottosen Britz Kelly Cooper Gilbert & Dinolfo Ltd. in Naperville.
