Graphic Packaging International faces retalitory firing claim

A woman is suing over claims she was fired in retaliation for trying to seeks workers' compensation benefits.

Jennifer Newing filed a lawsuit July 15 in the Cook County Circuit Court against Graphic Packaging International Inc., alleging retaliatory discharge.

According to the complaint, Newing was an employee of Graphic Packaging International on July 17, 2013, when she suffered a disabling injury to her right arm. By July 26, Newing claims her employer was aware she planned to file a workers' comp claim and fired her on Aug. 7 in retaliation for her intent to exercise her rights.

Newing is seeking more than $30,000 in damages and lost wages. She is being represented in the case by attorneys at Chepov & Scott LLC in Chicago.
