Former seaman files asbestos claim against dozens of companies

Dave barrett

A man is suing after years of asbestos exposure allegedly resulted in mesothelioma.

William Slatter filed suit July 23 in Cook County Circuit Court against A.W. Chesterton Co., H.B. Fuller Co., Union Carbide Co. and others.

According to the complaint, Slatter was employed as a seaman in various locations from 1940 to 1978, during which time he was exposed to and inhaled, ingested or otherwise absorbed asbestos fibers emanating from the defendant companies' products.

Slatter claims the exposure led him to develop mesothelioma, which he was diagnosed with on April 29. He alleges the defendants knew or should have known the asbestos fibers contained in their products had a toxic, poisonous and highly deleterious effect on the health of a person inhaling, ingesting or otherwise absorbing them.

Slatter is seeking damages in excess of the jurisdictional limits, plus costs. He is represented by Chicago attorney David O. Barrett of Cooney & Conway.
