Couple claims Alexius Medical Center, staff delayed child's birth

Stalexianbro

A couple is suing a Hoffman Estates hospital and group of doctors and nurses over claims their daughter sustained permanent injuries when staff held delayed her delivery until a doctor was present.

Laura and David Mokry, individually and as parents and next friends of their minor child, filed a lawsuit July 30 in the Cook County Circuit Court against St. Alexius Medical Center, Alexian Brothers Health System and several doctors and nurses.

According to the complaint, Laura Mokry was giving birth at St. Alexius Medical Center on July 30, 2006, when medical staff held her legs closed in order to prevent the birth of her daughter because a doctor was not present.

The couple claims the delay caused permanent injury to their daughter, including cognitive and physical limitations, frequent illness, diminished quality of life and risk of premature death.

The Mokrys accuse the defendants of failing to provide proper medical care, properly monitor the mother and child's medical conditions, and have a doctor present at the birth.

They are seeking more than $50,000 in damages and are being represented by attorney Daniel Giudice of Giudice Law Ltd. in Bensenville.

The suit names the following individuals as defendants: Drs. Konstantin Denev, Joanna E. Betancourt, Pamorn Kulsakdinum, Prafulla K. Koneru and Susan A. Orhan and registered nurses Christine K. Van Duys, Crystal R. Antos, Sara L. Jensen, Joanne M. Boston, Connie J. Bewick, Jean T. Cheloni, Lynn D. Creegan.
