Suit: Woman died from infection developed after cutting leg on Kmart shelf

The son of a woman who died from an infection she allegedly developed after cutting her leg at a suburban Kmart has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the retail store.

David Thompson, as independent administrator of the Estate of Dolores Thompson, filed a complaint Nov. 13 in Cook County Circuit Court against Kmart Corporation of Illinois Inc. and Sears Holding Management Corp.

According to the complaint, Dolores was shopping at a Kmart store in Streator on Nov. 15, 2012, when she hit a metal shelving unit while trying to avoid hitting boxes placed in the aisles by employees as she used one of  the store's motorized scooters.

She suffered a laceration to her leg, and was diagnosed with methicillin-resistant staph aureus (MRSA) infection after being examined by medical personnel, the suit states.

Thompson says Dolores died April 15 from complications with the infection. He is seeking more than $50,000 ind amages and is represented by attorney James A. Karamanis of Barney & Karamanis in Chicago.
