A Cook County man filed suit against a physician and his business, claiming medical malpractice in a 2013 treatment allegedly resulting in his stomach being punctured.

Salvador Gonzalez brought a complaint against John Song and Advocate Medical Group of Chicago on June 30 in Cook County Circuit Court, alleging medical malpractice in a July 2013 incident.

According to the filing, Gonzalez came under the defendant’s care on July 1, 2013, for spinal stenosis and lumbar spondylosis. The suit states that when Dr. Song performed a posterior lumbar fusion on that date, he carelessly and negligently failed to exercise due care and skill when he accidentally perforated the anterior wall body of the patient’s stomach, and then allegedly failed to recognize and repair the damage.

The suit states that a subsequent procedure intended to be an exploratory laparoscopy was converted to an open laparotomy in an effort to fix the resulting problems. Court documents indicate the plaintiff suffered injuries including pain and suffering, trauma, disability, disfigurement and medical expenses.

Gonzalez seeks damages of more than $50,000 plus attorney’s fees and costs. He is represented by Edward G. Proctor Jr., of Munday, Nathan & Schulkin in Chicago.
