Patient's post-surgery wound leads to suit against health care providers

Knee surgery

A Cook County woman is suing a hospital and medical personnel, alleging medical malpractice.

Virginia LaRocca filed a lawsuit Sept. 18 against Dr. Steven Arndt, nurse John J. Domantay, DuPage Medical Group, Northwestern Memorial Healthcare, CDH Delnor Health System doing business as Cadence Health, and Central DuPage Hospital Association doing business as Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital. She also named nine other health professionals as respondents in discovery.

According to the complaint, the defendants were negligent in their post-operative care of LaRocca, who underwent knee replacement surgery Sept. 20, 2013 at Cadence Health. After the initial operation, the plaintiff fell, the suit says, injuring her surgical wound, requiring additional procedures to correct, and causing her to undergo a second knee operation May 14, 2014.

The lawsuit says the fall could have been prevented if LaRocca had been given adequate ambulatory help, including multiperson assistance with standing and moving, adequate orthopedic braces and so forth.

LaRocca seeks a jury trial and damages of more than $50,000. She is represented by attorney Bradley M. Cosgrove of Clifford Law Offices in Chicago.

Cook County Circuit Court case number 2015-L-009579.
