A Cook County municipality is suing an accounting firm, alleging professional negligence and misrepresentation.

The village of Burnham filed a lawsuit Oct. 20 in Cook County Circuit Court against O’Neill and Gaspardo and The Walker Group Certified Public Accountants and Consultants.

According to the complaint, Burnham hired The Walker Group in 2010 to perform an audit for the 2006 fiscal year, while O’Neill and Gaspardo were retained in 2012 to audit the years 2007-2010. The suit says the accounting firms failed to identify a case of employee theft of $685,000 and otherwise failed to identify irregularities in the village’s financial statements.

Burnham seeks damages of more than $685,000. It is represented by attorneys Devon C. Bruce and Jonathan M. Thomas of Power, Rogers & Smith in Chicago.

Cook County Circuit Court case number 2015-L-010674.
