A Mississippi woman is suing a Deerfield-based pharmaceutical company, alleging product liability involving Actos, a drug used to treat diabetes.

Ella Martin, of Mississippi,  filed a lawsuit Sept. 11 in Cook County Circuit Court against Takeda Pharmaceuticals USA Inc., Takeda Pharmaceuticals, Takeda Pharmaceuticals International Inc., Takeda Global Research & Development Center Inc., Takeda California Inc. and Takeda Pharmaceutical Company.

According to the complaint, Martin suffered personal injuries and economic damage as a result of using Actos (generically known as pioglitazone), a pill manufactured and sold by the defendants.

The plaintiff alleges the drug caused bladder cancer as well as the risk of other cancers in the future, and is suing for reimbursement of her ongoing medical bills, pain and suffering, permanent injuries and reduction of life expectancy.

Martin seeks damages of more than $50,000, plus court costs. She is represented by attorney John J. Driscoll of The Driscoll Firm in St. Louis.
