Patient accuses Women's HealthFirst, surgeon of malpractice over third-degree burn

CHICAGO–A Vernon HiIls woman is suing health care providers, alleging medical negligence for a third-degree burn she suffered during a surgical procedure.

Valentina Babina filed a lawsuit Nov. 25 in Cook County Circuit Court against Dr. Erwin G. Szela Jr., Women’s HealthFirst and Hoffman Estates Surgery Center, alleging medical negligence.

According to the complaint, on Feb. 17, 2014, Szela placed a Bovie cautery pad on Babina’s leg during a procedure at Hoffman Estates Surgery Center. The suit says this caused the plaintiff to develop a third-degree burn on her thigh, which left her permanently scarred and disfigured.

Babina seeks a jury trial and damages in of more than $50,000, plus litigation costs. She is represented by attorney Ryan T. McNulty of Schiff Gorman in Chicago.
