Wife alleges Oak Park hospital's surgical error cost her husband his life

Heart care

CHICAGO – A Cook County woman is suing West Suburban Medical Center and its doctors, alleging they lied about her husband’s cause of death.

Rosalyn Willaby, special administrator of the estate of Carl Willaby, filed a lawsuit Dec. 14 in Cook County Circuit Court against West Suburban Medical Center Inc., Dr. Ankush Goel, Dr. Gerald Lynch, Dr. Michael Dehaan and Dr. George Theotikos, alleging medical malpractice.

According to the complaint, Carl Willaby allegedly suffered a heart attack March 10, 2012, after an operation the previous day for goiter removal at West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park. Willaby remained in the hospital until his death March 18, 2012.

In December 2013, Rosalyn Willaby obtained Carl’s medical records, the suit says, discovering his cause of death was an obstructed airway from the goiter surgery, rather than a heart attack as she had been told.

Willaby seeks damages of more than $50,000. She is represented by attorney Douglas G. Shreffler of Chicago.
