CHICAGO – A Cook County woman is suing a Chicago long-term care facility, alleging  their negligence caused the death of her 82-year-old mother.

Gwendolyn Bradford, independent administrator of the estate of Annie Atkins, filed a lawsuit Dec. 22 in Cook County Circuit Court against Alden-Lakeland Rehabilitation and Health Care Center Inc., doing business as Alden Lakeland Rehab & Health Care Center, alleging negligence and wrongful death.

According to the complaint, during her stay at Alden Lakeland Rehab in Chicago, Atkins was at risk for and suffered falls, a feeding tube infection and worsening pressure ulcers. The suit says Alden Lakeland’s staff was ill prepared to care for a patient such as Atkins, yet they kept her there despite the risks.

As a result of her injuries, the lawsuit states, Atkins’ mental and physical condition deteriorated, leading to her death Oct. 18, 2014.

Bradford seeks a jury trial and damages of more than $50,000, plus litigation costs. She is represented by attorney Terrence E. Davey of the Law Offices of Steven J. Malman & Associates PC in Chicago.
