CHICAGO – A Cook County man claims doctors at an orthopedic practice allowed him to walk with a broken foot bone, leading to ongoing injuries.
David Coffman filed a lawsuit Jan. 8 in Cook County Circuit Court against Midland Orthopedic Associates S.C., Dr. Stephen Perns, Dr. Evan Young and Advanced Ambulatory Surgical Center Inc., alleging medical malpractice.
According to the complaint, Coffman suffered a metatarsal fracture in his right foot on Oct. 9, 2013 from a work-related injury. After Perns examined Coffman in December 2013, the suit says Coffman received pain medication and a bone stimulator, but was allowed to walk.
In January 2014, Perns and Young attempted to repair the non-healing fracture, but the suit alleges they instead made the condition worse and continued to allow Coffman to walk on the injured foot after surgery. Coffman sought a second opinion, according to the claim, and had another doctor perform corrective surgery in June and November 2014
Coffman is seeking damages of more than $100,000. He is represented by attorney David J. Gallagher of The Vrdolyak Law Group LLC in Chicago.
