CHICAGO — A widow is suing a Chicago railroad, alleging insufficient measures were taken to protect her late husband from contracting leukemia.
Josefina Ramirez, representative of the estate of Salvador Ramirez, filed a lawsuit May 26 in Cook County Circuit Court against The Belt Railway Company of Chicago alleging negligence in failing to provide proper safety equipment to employees.
According to the complaint, from 1966 to 2005 Salvador Ramirez, who worked as a welder for The Belt Railway, was exposed to harmful inhalants and hazardous elements causing severe medical conditions which ultimately resulted in his premature death Dec. 12, 2013. The plaintiff alleges the defendant permitted employees to perform their duties in a potentially harmful environment without any proper safety equipment, which resulted in Ramirez contracting myeloid leukemia.
Josefina Ramirez seeks a trial by jury, judgment of more than $50,000 plus interest and court costs. She is represented by attorney Patrick S. O'Brien of Law Offices of Patrick S. O'Brien LLC in St. Louis.
